MEO recognised for innovation!

14 October 2013

Meomed is an Online Consultant Cardiologist support system providing bespoke patient reports which enables primary care to provide Consultant Cardiologist expertise to patients in a timely and informative manner.

Dr Neil Hobson consultant cardiologist at  consultant at Spire Hull and East Riding Hospital entered MEO's pilot project into the Software and Telehealth category of the prestigious 2013 Medipex Innovation Award and it was one of only five innovations to be invited to the awards ceremony in October 2013, gaining a finalist's award.

MEO is the UK’s only NHS-wide, Electrophysiologist-led service, offering GPs a full consultation report with patient management options for the GP to act upon. The system is supported by Arrhythmia Alliance and free trials are available to GPs.  Cardiology referrals from primary care are currently very high. Many patients would not need to be referred if a Cardiologist had access to the data that MEO provides. This would result in cost savings for primary care and reduce Consultant waiting times.

Using MEO, the GP uploads the ECG and completes the brief MEO patient questionnaire. The selected Consultant Cardiologist analyses the data, creating a patient specific care plan. The report and treatment plan with advice is returned to the GP within 48 hours. No software/hardware is needed as MEO is compatible with all current systems and practices.

The impact of MEO use is:

  • Ensures referral to appropriate cardiology speciality first time
  • Treats more patients in primary care, improving diagnostic quality and GP cardiology understanding
  • Electrophysiologist sees the appropriate patient at an earlier stage

Dr P Hanmer, NHS Engagement Consultant at the MedTECH Centre, where MEO are based said this, "I'm absolutely thrilled that innovation organisations within the NHS are starting to recognise the benefits of MEO to patients. This is a real vindication of the hard work that Neil and the team have put into this project."

Now that the pilot project has established the substantial cost savings and improved quality of service which the MEO system can deliver to the NHS, MEO will be implemented by a number of Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) across the UK.
