Edward Centre for Health Care Management Research Arrives at The MedTECH Centre

A Chinese investment company which specialises in providing health and social care for the elderly in China has chosen Manchester as the location for its new UK research and innovation centre.

Edward Healthcare, a subsidiary of Yuanzhen UK Investments, has chosen the MedTECH Centre on Manchester Science Park as the location for The Edward Centre for Health Care Management Research, which will explore international care systems which could be adopted for use in China.

At the same time it has signed a £1 million 10-year contract with TRUSTECH, the North West NHS Innovation Service, which will be working with Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC) Health Technology Hub and MIMIT (Manchester Integrating Medicine and Innovative Technology), to provide advisory, research and information services.

TRUSTECH was instrumental in bringing The Edward Centre to Manchester, after working with MIMIT to deliver a comprehensive set of manuals detailing the procedures for operating care homes.

Dr Richard Deed from TRUSTECH will advise The Edward Centre on building links with North West healthcare experts, together with Professor Jackie Oldham, Head of MIMIT, who has been appointed Honorary Director of the Centre.

Peter Bullock, Managing Director of The Edward Centre, said: "Manchester is the ideal location for many reasons.  We are keen to collaborate with Prof Oldham, who is a leading expert in rehabilitation science, and to access the resources of Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC), renowned for its excellence across research, innovation, education and patient service.

"Having already worked very successfully with TRUSTECH and MIMIT, we wanted to build on a strong relationship and take it to the next stage.  Manchester also has a vibrant Chinese community and is a destination of choice for industry and entrepreneurs."

Dr Deed added: "We see this as a great opportunity for the NHS and commercial sector to collaborate with China in sharing expertise in providing high quality care for elderly people. Together with The Edward Centre, we can identify anti-ageing technologies, products and new models of care and contribute to training and education programmes for elder care staff in the UK and China."

The first output of the project will be a quarterly magazine to appear in Spring 2013 to keep both healthcare professionals and the elderly up to speed with what is happening in the home care and care home world and other developments for the elderly.

Rowena Burns, Chief Executive of Manchester Science Parks, said: “We are pleased to welcome Edward Healthcare to the MedTECH Centre at Manchester Science Park. Our network of like-minded people, know how, associated partners, direct access to clinical leads, and first-class resources combine to make MSP the optimum location for any life science company, particularly those looking to expand into the UK. We are looking forward to passing on the benefits of our extensive community.”
