Healthcare professionals from each organisation have collaborated to develop an innovative method to reduce the amount of transfused blood required for operative procedures. SwabTech is developing a device, the swab washwer, that automatically extracts blood soaked up in swabs during surgical procedures enabling it to be transferred back to the patient. Recycling blood in this manner offers many advantages over a blood transfusion. The company has been established and has received initial funding from the North West Fund for BioMedical to develop an initial prototype.
